Support package upgrades

Cloud software is comprised of two distinct components: the cloud infrastructure software and the cloud server software.

The version number for the cloud software is comprised of the version numbers of these two components:

  • Cloud version number   This number is the version of the cloud infrastructure.

  • SQL Anywhere version number   This number is the version of the cloud server software.

The following table describes the upgrades that can be applied to the cloud:

Upgrading the cloud:

  • Upgrades the cloud infrastructure, which includes the Cloud Console, as well as the logic of cloud features such as users, privileges, tasks, rules, maintenance plans, events, and tags.

  • Upgrades every host.

  • Installs cloud server software on each host. The cloud servers are not changed.

Depending on the size of your cloud, this upgrade can be a lengthy process. Only upgrade the cloud infrastructure when it is necessary.

The cloud is unavailable for a short period of time during the upgrade, and cloud tasks cannot run. However, all tenant databases continue to run and are available.

The cloud infrastructure can only be upgraded to a newer version of the cloud software.

Host

Upgrade all your hosts at the same time by upgrading the cloud with the cloud infrastructure upgrade.

In some cases, you can install cloud software on a host independent of the cloud infrastructure upgrade. For example, you need a version 12 cloud server on a host.

Installing software on a host includes upgrading the host and installing the cloud server software. The cloud servers are not changed.

Cloud server

Upgrading a cloud server involves changing the software version of the cloud server to a newer version of the cloud server software.

Cloud server software is installed (but not upgraded) on a host when the cloud infrastructure is upgraded and when cloud software is installed on a host.

Database

Upgrading a tenant database in the cloud is similar to upgrading a SQL Anywhere database that exists outside of the cloud. A tenant database is upgraded to the same major and minor software version as its cloud server.
