Add a host by creating a host install and running it on the computer(s) that you want to add to the cloud.
You must have the AddHost privilege.
On Linux, you must run as the root user.
Comply with the host requirements.
The cloud software must be downloaded to the cloud.
A cloud software package is specific to a particular operating system.
The host install is large and stays in the cloud for the duration of time that you specify. When you create a host install, you also create a downloader file called dbcloudaddhost. This smaller file is the one that you distribute onto the computers you want to add to the cloud. Running dbcloudaddhost on a computer causes the host install software to be downloaded from the cloud and set up on the computer.
If you cannot access the Cloud Console, then navigate to https://host-name:port-number/dbcloud/addhost.
|Host install type||
Specify Single use if you have one computer that you want to turn into a cloud host. Single use host installs are no longer available for use once they have been used. When you choose Single use, you must specify the name of the computer for the host name.
Specify Multiple use if you have several (homogeneous) computers you want to add as hosts, or if you expect to run the host install multiple times.
This field is only visible for single-use host installs. Specify the machine name of the host being added to the cloud. The machine name can contain only the following characters: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, minus sign (-), period (.), and underscore (_).
This field is only visible for single-use host installs. Specify whether the IP address of the host is dynamic or static.
Static IP addresses must be valid IPv4 or IPv6 addresses usable from remote machines. Static IP addresses are used when starting cloud servers on the host. They are also used to create connection strings for clients and other to cloud servers running on the host.
|Valid for (days)||
This field is only visible for multiple-use host installs. Specify the number of days that the host install should remain available for download.
|Install can be run on||
This field is only visible for multiple-use host installs. Specify Restricted to enter the names and/or IP addresses for the computers that the host install can be run on. For security purposes, this is the recommended method for installing more than one host.
Specify Unrestricted - can be installed on any machine if you do not want to restrict where the host install can be run.
Select the operating system and bitness of where the host install can be run.
Specify the location to install the software and application data, or accept the default installation directories (recommended). For example, the cloud installation directory defaults to:
C:\Program Files\SQL Anywhere on-demand 1.0
The application data directory defaults to:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\SQL Anywhere on-demand 1.0
Specify the ports that cloud servers on the host can use, or accept the default ports (recommended). If you specify an unavailable port, you are prompted to change it before you can proceed.
|Run cloud server(s) as||This option applies only to Linux. Specify the Linux user that will run the cloud software on the host.|
|After installation||Select Create and start a cloud server on the host to start a cloud server on the newly added host.|
A host install is created and a file called dbcloudaddhost is downloaded to the default download location for your browser. This is not the actual host install software. It is an executable that you run on the hosts you want to add to the cloud.
If you chose Multiple use because you intend to run the host install on multiple computers, then you must put a copy of dbcloudaddhost on each of those computers.
The executable downloads the appropriate host install from the cloud and runs it.
Scripting tip: When you run dbcloudaddhost from the command line, for example as part of a script, several optional parameters are supported:
Reads in options from the specified environment variable or configuration file.
To protect passwords or other information in the configuration file, you can use the File Hiding utility (dbfhide) to encrypt the contents of the configuration file.
Specifies the user ID to connect to the cloud (Required).
Specifies the password to connect to the cloud (Required).
Logs output messages to the window and to the specified file.
Suppresses output to the window.
When you run dbcloudaddhost on the host that you want to add to the cloud, it downloads the host install that you created and runs it. The host install adds the host to the cloud, and also creates and starts a cloud server if specified. If you specified Multiple use, then the host is named according to the computer that it runs on.
You can create and start cloud servers on the host, or add tenant databases to the cloud host you just added.
If you ran this task as part of setting up a cloud partner or cloud arbiter, ensure that you follow the steps for configuring and enabling high availability.
