Autostart and autostop databases

Databases that are configured to autostart and autostop, start automatically during a client connection and stop automatically after the last client connection disconnects.

Note It is recommended that only very infrequently accessed databases (accessed once a week or less) have autostart and autostop enabled.

TDS (Open Client and jConnect) or HTTP/HTTPS connections do not support starting databases automatically.

An autostart database is also configured to autostop by default. A database cannot be configured to autostop without also being configured to autostart. Autostart databases cannot be involved in a mirroring or read-only scale-out system.

By default, an autostop database waits 10 minutes after the last connection disconnects before stopping. An autostop database that is started manually does not stop automatically.

By default, the maximum time that a connection waits while attempting automatically start a database is 120 seconds. Edit the cloud properties or run the AlterCloud task to change this default.

A database can be configured to autostart and autostop when it is added to the cloud or afterward.

Whether a database is configured to autostart can affect how many databases can be added to a cloud server. In general, you can add to a cloud server significantly more autostop databases than non-autostart databases.
