Changing the software version of a cloud server

Change the software version of the cloud server by editing the properties of the cloud server.

Prerequisites

You must have the CreateDropServer privilege.

The version of the cloud server software that you want to use must be installed on the host.

When changing a cloud server from one version to another, the cloud server must:

  • not be running any databases that have a higher version number than the target cloud server version.
  • not be running a database involved in a mirroring or read-only scale-out system.
  • not be acting as an arbiter for a database mirroring system.
  • not be running any database that has an arbiter.

Context

Cloud servers with different major and minor versions can run on the same host. In a production environment, upgrade your cloud servers, including the cloud partners and cloud arbiter, when the cloud server software contains a fix to a problem.

The cloud servers restart during the version change.

Procedure

Choose from the following options:
Option Action
Change the software version of cloud servers that are not cloud partners or the cloud arbiter.
  1. On the Cloud Software panel, click the cloud software version that you want to change the cloud servers to.

  2. Click Start of the navigation path Other actions Next navigation step Change Server version End of the navigation path, and follow the instructions.

Change the software version of the cloud partners and cloud arbiter.

Changing the software version of the cloud partners and cloud arbiter in a high availability configuration requires disabling high availability temporarily.

  1. Connect your browser to a cloud server that is not a cloud partner or cloud arbiter.

For example, specify https://server-host:port/dbcloud, where server-host is the name or IP address of the host, and port is the HTTPS port for a cloud server that is not acting as cloud partner or cloud arbiter.

  2. Disable high availability.

    1. On the cloud Overview panel, click Configure high availability.

    2. Select one of the options that turns off high availability and converts one of the cloud partners back to a regular cloud server.

    3. Click Finish.

  3. Stop the former cloud partner and former cloud arbiter.

    1. On the Servers panel, select the cloud servers that used to be the cloud partner and cloud arbiter.

    2. Click Stop.

  4. Alter each cloud server's properties.

    1. Select a stopped server and click Properties.

    2. On the General tab, click the Version dropdown menu and click the SQL Anywhere version you want to change the cloud server to.

    3. Click OK.

  5. Start both cloud servers.

    1. On the Servers panel, select the stopped cloud servers that used to be the cloud partner and cloud arbiter.

    2. Click Start.

  6. On the cloud Overview panel, click Configure high availability and re-enable high availability by resetting the cloud partner and cloud arbiter.

  7. Repeat the steps b to e, this time converting the cloud partner whose server version has not been changed back to a regular cloud server.

  8. On the cloud Overview panel, click Configure high availability and follow the instructions to enable high availability.

Change the software version of all cloud servers at the same time.

If the entire cloud can be stopped, then choose this option.

  • Run the AlterServerVersionOnRestart task and specify a search query that encompasses all cloud servers and leave the version set to NULL.

  • Once the AlterServerVersionOnRestart task has finished, stop and restart your cloud.

When the cloud servers restart, they use the most recent SQL Anywhere server software installed on their hosts.

Results

The cloud server software has been changed to the specified version.
