You can specify a central LDAP server to keep track of all database servers in an enterprise if you are operating on a Windows (except Windows Mobile) or Unix platform. When the database server registers itself with an LDAP server, clients can query the LDAP server and find the database server they are looking for, regardless of whether they are on a WAN, a LAN, or going through firewalls. LDAP name server lookup is not utilized by clients that specify the database server address with the Host connection parameter or the HOST protocol option.
